Aside from having the right product for your skin type, we beauty junkies and makeup enthusiasts must also know how to apply such. There are many ways in applying makeup, and that's why we must choose the most appropriate technique for us.
So, the question still stands. Makeup brush or sponge?
For today's makeup tip, we will learn pros and cons of using a makeup brush or sponge from this moderately long and detailed blog post.
1. Primer
Some people actually skip this step, yet it's important to keep your face from getting oily while prolonging the makeup. I also apply it using my fingers. I prefer to use my finger since I can tell which part of my face does not have any primer yet. But I am choosing between a sponge and a brush. Honestly, I'll go with a brush since the sponge can easily absorb the product. Using a flat foundation brush would be best for a primer, since you can use the brush to apply the product evenly on your face.
2. Foundation
Typically, lots of people would prefer to use a brush to apply foundation. When I apply foundation, I use a flat foundation brush or a flat (or angled) top kabuki brush. Using that type of brush will really spread the product evenly and smoothly. A sponge would actually do a better job here. The secret is to use a damp sponge and get a tiny amount of foundation first, and then pat the product on your face. You must not rub the sponge on your face. With this method, you'll be able to evenly blend the foundation, without having to poke your pores with a brush.
3. 2-way Cake Foundation
Cake foundation is popular among local beauty pageants because of its ability to stay put for hours. Obviously, a brush would be useless here. The best way to use a cake foundation is to dampen a sponge, get a few products, and pat it lightly on your face. Do not rub it across your face.
4. Eyeshadow
You know that eyeshadow set that always come with a sponge applicator? I actually don't like those sponge applicator, and I would just ignore it, and use an eyeshadow brush instead. Using that sponge applicator will only cause an unblended and messy eyeshadow look. Although, sponge applicators are actually great when you want to pat pigments on your lid. But never use it to blend your eyeshadow.
5. BB or CC Cream
Since both types of cream have a similar consistency to a foundation, some people prefer using a makeup brush to apply the product. I would just rather use my fingers. But if I were to choose between a brush or sponge, sponge would be a winner since it will spread the product evenly. I also find it annoying when the brush looks like it absorbed the product, rather than distributing it to your face. Always remember to dampen the sponge before using it.
6. Face Powder
A compact powder will always be handy for touchups. But what works better, a sponge or a brush? Honestly, the answer is both. If you're at home doing your makeup, a brush would be better. If you're out, then a flat sponge would do good. Always remember that a sponge is not meant to be rubbed on your face.
I guess that's all. I have yet to see a lip sponge. Basically, sponges will work best for products that need to be lightly patted onto the skin.
Whether a brush or a sponge, anything would work depending on your preferences. Just remember that you should never be harsh when using a brush or a sponge. Be gentle and take care of your tools, as they will be useful for a very long time.
