Applying makeup for beginners is just the tip of an iceberg. Once a person finds the makeup creasing, how do you fix it?
If you saw how cakey your makeup looks, what would you do to lessen the cakey appearance?
Once I started using makeup, I faced that problem immediately. After some time, I was able to learn different tricks based on experience and from the internet.
Here are the secrets in preventing creasing and cakey makeup.
For beginners, some may tend to put too much foundation and powder, which eventually leads to a cakey makeup. To fix this, try rubbing your palms together, and gently tap your warm hands on your face.
This will act as a magnet to lift away excess powder since rubbing your palms together generates static. The warm palms will also melt the product together on your face.
Using a dense round or flat top kabuki brush will also help. Once you are done with your face and it looks really cakey, swirl or buff the brush around your face lightly. This will dust off some excess product.
You can also use a large powder brush (like Real Techniques Powder brush) and sweep it downwards and across your face to remove some of the product.
Using a damp sponge to apply foundation shall lessen the products on your face, too. This also prevents creasing when finished with powder properly.
Avoid using a pressed powder with a sponge (especially a powder foundation) to set your foundation. It leads to cakiness. But if you insist, use a very dense kabuki brush (like Sigma F80 or F82) swirl it around the powder to get some product then tap it around your face to avoid getting excessive powder.
The last option for a cakey makeup is a damp towel. Do not rub it on your face. Tap it on cakey areas. If you have a beauty blender, you may dampen it and tap it around the cakey areas of your face. This technique will make the powder somehow melt and combine with the foundation.
To prevent cakey makeup, use a decent amount of foundation. Make sure to not put too much layer, especially if the foundation is creamy. It's best to use a loose powder with a brush to set the makeup.
Cooking/Baking is a famous makeup technique. People saw the trick from drag queens, then was spread across youtube and beauty gurus around the world. The trick is to use a sponge to apply a thick layer of loose powder on your under eye (or under the contour for a sharper edge) for a few minutes, then dust it off. This shall prevent under eye creasing.
Primer. Glycerin based primer is used to prevent your face from producing too much oil. It also makes the skin smoother for an easier application and helps prolong the makeup. Eyeshadow primers are useful if you want to prevent eyeshadow creasing. Invest on a good eyeshadow primer and your eyeshadow will undeniably pop and last longer.
It is also important to understand that not all tricks will work. While being patient with trial and error is important, one must also consider the weather, skin type, and formula of makeup. Normally, creamy foundations tend to make me feel more cakey which leads me to crease easily later on. They have a better coverage, but they feel heavier on the face.
Don't be scared to try different recommended brands, there are many affordable foundations and primers out there, you just have to be willing to try them out.
Be patient and have fun!
